The new Mawlai Mohamed Mosque looks over sharai al-Zawia , and sharaia 17 feb (al- jamahriya ) in Tripoli. It was bulit following the removal of the old mosque in 1966.
The old mosque was bulit by Mawlai Mohamed, one of the sultans of Fas , Morocco, while on his way to make Haj towards the end of the thirteenth century .
Beside the mosque , there is a cemetery for the burial of the Muslims dead, a Zawia for the memorization of the Qur'an, ever since the street where the mosque is has been named sharia al-Zawia .
The new mosque was opend in 1970, and is considerd one of the biggest and the most magnificent mosques in Libya. The mosque has a big circular dome and two minarets, each minaret with two terraces, there are some gypsum ornamets inside and outside.Inside the mosque, the prayers hall is richly elegantly and exquisitely ornamented with verses from the Qur'an.
