Gentlemen Of The Road (BY NAZEK JAMAL)

Why did people once think of highwaymen as bandits, who robbed travelers in the seventeenth and eighteenth century in England, as gentlemen? Since there was a rise of very wealthy class in both centuries, England became a nation of rich and poor. The rich dressed in silk and velvet, they lived on huge estate, traveled to London to party throughout the whole year where gambling was their favorite pastime. While the rich became wealthier; the conditions of the poor were getting worse because the government did not care about them. They lived in filthy slums, in farms, 74 percent of the children died before the age of five. As the newly built roads ran through the countryside, these rods brought out more rich travelers. The highwaymen stop the private carriages and robed the passengers. Some people really agreed that they were gentleman of the road as they called themselves believe it or not even their victims. Some people saw them as the new robin hoods because they gave part of what they stole to the poor. Another reason why they thought these bandits were gentlemen was because they dressed like them. Because these former butchers, footmen, and cheese sellers once they turn to the life of crime they can afford the high heeled boots the fancy shirts and the elegant coats. Several highwaymen actually acted like gentlemen, for instance many would never raise a gun on women or search for her valuables some politely begged their victims as they took their money and jewels. What do you think do these who call themselves gentlemen deserve that reputation? Or are they the victims of an awful government?
