Imagine by John Lennon

John Lennon’s imagine is a great hit single that has touched our hearts so many times and will always do.

The song is very spiritual and unrealistic. The reason why it’s unrealistic is because he is telling us to imagine these things that don’t exist because he is dreaming of a better tomorrow, a tomorrow that does not exist. In the book “Lennon in America”, by Geoffrey Giuliano, Lennon himself commented that Imagine was an "anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic, but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted."

“Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try” “no hell below us, above us only sky.” Those are the first two lines of the song. If there’s no heaven then there’s nothing better than what we have on Earth and if there’s no hell then there’s nothing worse than what we could find on Earth and if above us there’s just a clear blue sky then the sky is our limit and that any experiences we will have during our life or after it will be on Earth. It’s like he’s telling us to imagine that God doesn’t exist and if God didn’t exist then people won’t be judged and that all they did was live without ever feeling guilty or worrying about what would happen to them after they pass away. Just like he says in the next line, people will live for today like there’s no tomorrow.

“Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too.” In this verse Sir Lennon is saying that if there are no countries then we would all be living together, no border lines, no continents, no oceans nothing that would separate the human race. We would all be living together in peace and nobody would want to take someone else’s land or property therefore there will be no battles nor wars. If we were all of the same religion there won’t be difference in opinion and there won’t be any criticism we would all have the same point of view and we would agree to the same things. Without all these things people would be living life in peace.

“Imagine no possessions ,I wonder if you can. No need for greed or hunger a brotherhood of man.” In the third and final verse he is saying that if people did not possess then everyone will be equal. Everybody will have the same life , there will be no poor people and no rich people, the rich people can give those who are in need. If people lived and believed in the fact that we are all siblings, brothers and sisters, the sons’ and daughters’ of Adam and Eve then we would share the world and live together in it peacefully. Everything could be provided for everyone if people do not possess. “A brotherhood of man,” brothers and sisters stand up for each other and that’s how this world should be, everyone should stand up for everyone else we should not be enemies for we were not born enemies, we were born as siblings and friends.

Sir John Lennon in his song “Imagine” has dreamt a dream, a dream in which we were one for all and all for one and that together we could do the impossible. This song is a legacy a hero/heroine it is made to save the day, save the world but of course it need to be heard and understood first, then only this dream will would come true.

“A dream you dream alone is just a dream.

A dream you dream together is reality.” –John Lennon
